SPRING
Spring is the time to wake up your lawn from its long winter
dormancy. Start off by raking any debris such as matted leaves and
twigs that have accumulated since the fall. To do this use a
hand rake or get a power rake done. However, power raking should
only be done if you have a build-up of thatch.
Snow and debris build-up over the winter can cause the soil to become
hard and compacted. The best way to relieve compacted soil is by
core aeration. This will allow water, air and fertilizer to be
more readily available to your lawn's root zone. This will help
keep your lawn healthy and thus more resistant to disease and insect
infestation.
A spring fertilization will also help turf grasses to develop shoot
and root growth. For spring and summer, consider using a
slow release fertilizer that gradually makes nutrients available to the
grass. Nitrogen encourages green color and vigor;
phosphorous is used to aid root development; potassium or potash is for
maintaining hardiness and disease resistance. Fertilizer should be
applied evenly and at a proper rate to prevent burning.
